J, the youngest letter, and the names that carry it
For most of history, J did not exist as its own letter. It began as a fancy tail on a Latin I, and English only treated the two as separate letters from about the 1600s. That makes it the youngest letter in the alphabet, and one of the most popular. In recent United States birth records, J has been the most common first letter for boys.
A Hebrew backbone
Hebrew is the biggest source of J names in our list, which makes sense: Jacob, Joseph, Joshua, Jonah, Joel, Jeremiah and Jonathan are all Biblical. Some connections are neat. James and Jacob share a root and both mean "supplanter". Jonah and Jemima both mean "dove". Joseph ("he will add") and Josephine ("God will add") are close cousins.
A letter that sounds different everywhere
The J sound changes with the language. In English it is a soft "j". In Spanish, Javier and Joaquin begin with a breathy "h", in German and Dutch Jan and Joost begin with a "y", and in French Jacques and Jules take a soft "zh". Chinese names such as Jian, Jun and Jia use the pinyin J, which is a gentle "j" made further forward in the mouth.
That variety is a bonus for families with a mixed heritage. Indian names add Jai and Jaya, which both mean victory, and Jyoti, which means light. Arabic offers Jamal (beauty) and Jamila (beautiful), and the African names Jabari (brave) and Jelani (mighty) bring a strong sound with a strong meaning.
